Civilization

48 hours ago I was in the bush. As usual, we had no running water. Our Canadian friends did just complete the wiring on the house, so we have lights and power when we turn on the generator. And the cell company just built a tower, so we have cell coverage and internet . . . except when local hooligans steal the battery and disable the tower. (You gotta love Africa!)

The past hours, though, have involved high speed (for Africa) Internet, hot showers in a real bathroom with a flush commode, electricity whenever I need it, and . . . [drumroll, please] . . . traffic jams!

Civilization isn't all its cracked up to be!

But, after hours of grocery shopping (20 people for a week in the wilderness means a lot of food!), errands in the heart of Kampala, and lots of traffic jams (matatu drivers aren't exactly gracious or considerate drivers), we had several hours to retreat from it all at the American Club -- pool, food, lots of westerners, television . . . not to mention tennis courts, weight room, masseuse, and more). Swimming after a hot city day was definitely a huge blessing; so was the hot shower afterward!

We leave in a couple of hours to go back to the wilderness, where you don't have to worry about lunatic drivers or smog or grocery shopping. Oh, and I won't have to get up at insane hours of the morning just to talk to people at home.

One more glorious week at my home-away-from-home and then I'll have to go back to the stress of America with all its traffic jams and drama. Oi vey, what's wrong with me? ;-)

Anyway, folks, Uganda is amazing. God is awesome. I'm so glad I'm here.
