Observation: New York City reminded me of Nairobi, Kenya and Kampala, Uganda.
(Now I will try to quickly explain my comparison before I am ostracized or ridiculed or worse.)

Kampala is a very pedestrian-centered city. So is NYC.

NYC has street vendors selling rip-offs. So does Kampala. (Example: sunglasses.)

Kampala has lunatic drivers. NYC is also insane. (Except at least in NYC the drivers generally stay in the designated lanes.)

Both cities have massive amounts of people.

As an English-only speaker, I was in the minority in both cities.

Taxi drivers are beyond merciless when jockeying for position in line. Applicable to both cities.

Restrooms are few and far between. (And the lines are atrociously long and the facilities are ridiculously filthy.)

Food is purchased off the street with ease -- pretzels in NYC, grilled corn in Kampala.

And that, o ye Internet, is why New York City reminded me of Kampala, Uganda and Nairobi, Kenya.
